With the fast changing landscape and rising costs in living, retiring and healthcare, are parents still willing or even able to finance their child’s university education? Or should they focus on making sure that their retirement years are not going to be a financial burden on their child?
In Singapore, a 22 year old student took his estranged father to court to compel him to finance his tertiary education. The case was dismissed by the court, but it ignited a public debate on the extent to which a parent is responsible for his or her child.
Here is a commentary by finance blogger Dawn Cher on the issue.
“Willing parents are still more than welcome to fund their children’s higher education. However, such generosity should not be mistaken for an obligated entitlement”, she said.
