In spiritual terms, healing your heart means addressing and resolving past traumas, emotional wounds, and negative patterns and habits of thinking that hinder your personal well-being and growth. It is a process of emotional, mental and spiritual transformation that walks you through your fears to the other side of peace and love.
Before you can even begin to heal your heart, you will need to be aware of the need for healing. Many people go through their entire life not seeing this inner need for healing. Some will deny it outright. As we have said before, awareness must come before any change is possible.
Being aware of the need for healing usually means recognizing and acknowledging the emotional pain and trauma that we are carrying. It is important to understand that these negative experiences are part of our life journey. To work through them, we will need to accept them without judgment. This acceptance will not come easily, and we will encounter a lot of resistance within us before acceptance can finally arrive.
As in training your mind, one important life skill here is mindfulness – especially in being mindful of our resistance, our emotional pain and fear as they bubble up to the surface. Simply watching them as they arise, without any judgment on our part can gradually ease us into allowing them and accepting them as they are.
Know that your resistance, emotional pain and fear are not your enemies. They are your friends and teachers. They are there because they serve a useful function. They are a reminder that we have strayed from our natural state of being.
Another important skill to learn here is forgiveness – the ability to accept, allow, and finally let go of the resistance, pain and fear. Letting go of judgments, resentments and grudges towards yourself is self compassion. Forgiveness releases the hold that negative emotions have over you.
To practice self compassion and self love, engage in self care practices that nurture your mind, body and spirit. Be kind to yourself. Reward yourself for small successes. Rest, if you must. There is no need to punish yourself, or be hard on yourself.
Learn some healthy methods and techniques to become more aware of your emotions. Recognize their many nuances and manifestations. Learn also to fully feel and express your emotions. Some healthy outlets for releasing pent-up negative emotions are journaling, art or professional therapy.
Put aside time for prayers, inner reflection and meditation. See how your thoughts and beliefs influence your emotions and behaviors, determine your attitude and your world view. Seek a deeper connection with your spirituality, whatever this means to you. It can be your connection to nature, to God, or to your religion.
Surround yourself with supportive, loving, and positive people – people who uplift and encourage your healing. Build connections that foster a sense of belonging and understanding.
Finally, release your attachment to past pain. Embrace the present, and look forward to a better future – one that is more aligned to your new authentic self. By this point, you would have become stronger, and more resilient.
In essence, healing your heart spiritually is about creating harmony within yourself, and fostering a sense of peace, love, and fulfillment. It’s an ongoing journey of self-discovery and transformation that leads to a more balanced and enlightened way of living.
