{"id":938,"date":"2017-06-06T01:37:20","date_gmt":"2017-06-06T01:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.klinikong.com\/?p=938"},"modified":"2017-06-06T01:37:20","modified_gmt":"2017-06-06T01:37:20","slug":"this-new-gene-therapy-could-help-turn-off-asthma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/06\/this-new-gene-therapy-could-help-turn-off-asthma\/","title":{"rendered":"This new gene therapy could help &#8216;turn-off&#8217; asthma!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sydney: A new gene therapy has been developed by a team of researchers that could help to &#8216;turn-off&#8217; the immune response which causes allergic reaction such as asthma, or potentially lethal food allergies.<\/p>\n<p>Ray Steptoe, Associate Professor at the University of Queensland in Australia said,&#8221;When someone has an allergy or asthma flare-up, the symptoms they experience results from immune cells reacting to protein in the allergen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The study showed that the single treatment may give life-long protection from asthma as well as those who have severe allergies to peanuts, bee venom, shell fish and other substances by de-sensitising the immune system to tolerate the protein.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Steptoe said,&#8221;The challenge in asthma and allergies is that these immune cells, known as T-cells, develop a form of immune &#8216;memory&#8217; and become very resistant to treatments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added,&#8221;We have now been able &#8216;wipe&#8217; the memory of these T-cells in animals with gene therapy, de-sensitising the immune system so that it tolerates the protein.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For the study, the team took blood stem cells, and inserted a gene which regulated the allergen protein and put that into the recipients.<\/p>\n<p>Steptoe noted,&#8221;Those engineered cells produced new blood cells that express the protein and target specific immune cells, &#8216;turning off&#8217; the allergic response.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said, the eventual goal would be a single injected gene therapy, that is simpler and safer which could be used across a wide cross-section of affected individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The finding is detailed in the journal JCI Insight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sydney: A new gene therapy has been developed by a team of researchers that could help to &#8216;turn-off&#8217; the immune response which causes allergic reaction [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":939,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[17,29,155,315],"class_list":["post-938","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-body","tag-allergies","tag-asthma","tag-gene","tag-therapy"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/938","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=938"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/938\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/wp-json\/"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=938"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=938"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/klinikong.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=938"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
