What we can see, hear, smell, taste and touch with our bodily sense organs is what our mind can perceive and interpret, and thus experience. Being confined to our planet earth also means that we can only know what is here on earth. So far, our scientists have not been able to discover any evidence of life elsewhere in our solar system or in our Milky Way galaxy.

In this way, our experience is limited by what our physical body can sense, and what our mind can perceive. Additionally, we must remember that what our mind can perceive is limited by what we believe is possible. Thus, another limiting factor is our own belief system. It is not a matter of “I’ll believe it when I see it.” Rather, it is “I’ll see it when I believe it.”

Why is this realisation important? It is important because we do not live in a universe of matter alone. This universe is a world of matter and mind, and mind is the active creative force. Mind creates. Mind is limitless. Mind can experience time and space, and it can also transcend time and space. Mind can contract, and it can also expand, without limits. Mind can be in the present moment, but it can also traverse the past or project into the future.

So, in exploring the unknown reality, we need to expand our mind, remove limiting beliefs and see beyond what is possible. Keep an open mind.

Life in this Physical World

I dare say that it is the arrogance of science that says that we are the only lifeform in this vast physical universe. I would further say that it is our own limited knowledge and our limiting belief system that is preventing us from perceiving life apart from our own.

The ancients believe that the universe itself is alive, and stars and planets are living entities. Likewise on earth, they see the mountains, the seas, the lands and soil as alive, vibrant with living energy, and perhaps consciousness. There were stories of elves and spirit beings living among human in the past. There are shamans and druids who could commune with spirits of animals, of the lands and seas.

There is an aspect of spiritual experience that modern human has lost touch with. Is it because the stories were not true, or because our mind is closed and therefore cannot see it anymore? Is there an aspect of life that we are no longer having access to?

Another point to reflect on is this – Are we truly the only lifeform in this vast universe? Might it not be more likely that there are other lifeforms elsewhere in the universe? Is there already evidence for such lifeforms, even on planet earth that we are not able to see or accept? Are the stories of advance ancient civilizations such as Lemuria and Atlantis merely myths or are they based on memories of a bygone era? The ancient city of Troy was thought to be a mythical city until it was discovered by Heinrich Schliemann in 1871. And what of the pyramids of Egypt? Who really built them? With the technology that we have today, it would still be a formidable challenge to build these pyramids, what more for the ancient Egyptians.

Ancient people talked of gods who lived and walked among them and angels that came down from heaven. They talked about gods who fought wars among themselves, and caused great destructions with their flying weapons and vehicles. These stories are found in the Indian Vedas and the Sumerian texts. Are those myths or are they like Troy, truth waiting to be discovered? Could these beings be extra-terrestrial, meaning they are not of this planet earth, but from another planet or star system? The Dogon people of Mali long knew of the existence of Sirius B, a white dwarf star that was not visible to the naked eye, and was not discovered by astronomers until the 1950s. When asked, they claimed this knowledge came from their gods. It was not just the Sirius star system that the ancient seem to be fascinated with. It seems that the Egyptian pyramids are aligned with the stars on the Orion Belt.

And why are the ancients so fascinated with the stars, anyway?

Life in the Spirit World

All major religions on earth talk about heaven and hell, two realms of existence that are not visible to us. They are considered to be spiritual worlds or dimensions. Some religions even explained that there are many different realms within heaven and hell, each catering to beings of various purity. Purity here refers to purity of the heart-mind. The heavenly realms are loving in nature, and the hell realms are fearful. Thus, when you have a heart of pure unconditional love, you resonate with the energy of love and end up in a heavenly realm. Likewise, when you have a fearful heart, you are likely to end up in one of the hell realms as your energy resonates with it.

To see this from a different perspective, imagine this universe – both physical and spiritual – consisting of many different realms of existence. Each of these realms has a specific energy or frequency. Beings in each realm are there because their energy resonates with the energy of that particular realm. The higher the frequency, the more loving and wise one is. Likewise, the lower the frequency, the more fearful and ignorant one is.

The key to purifying the heart-mind is in performing wholesome actions that are beneficial for both self and others. Further purification of the heart-mind is achieved through meditation.

In many religious traditions, it is said that the key to ascension is to go beyond the ego-self. It is further stated that fear is an illusion, created by the ignorance of the ego-self that sees one as separate from the rest of creation. In fact, there is only one “over-self” and each of us is simply one aspect of this “over-self”. Thus, we are inter-connected not just with all living entities but also with all matters, and life itself.

We can therefore say that hell is an illusory place created by the fearful heart-mind, but it is very real to those entities who find themselves there. In the same way, our physical world is an illusory world that our collective heart-mind has created. Again, it is very real to all of us who are in it. The same is true for heaven. That is why in the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, the world is called “maya” – illusory.

Spiritual Experiences in a Physical World

Is there any evidence that there is even such a thing as spirit?

Well, actually there are many examples of spiritual experiences even in this physical life of ours. People have had out-of-body experiences – both spontaneously and at will. Then, we have those with near-death experiences who reported extraordinary experiences in the spiritual realm and came back to share them with us. Those nearing death, who are dying, have also reported strange phenomena, such as premonition of their own death (sometimes being able to tell the exact date or time of death), being visited by relatives or loved ones who had passed away earlier, and even having a glimpse of the other side of the veil. Scientists have also experimented with remote viewing with some success.

Then, there are also those paranormal phenomena, such as ghosts, and people who are able to see or sense them. In fact, there are many instances of these, if we are opened enough to explore them.

So, yes, there are spiritual experiences in our physical world too.

Conclusion

In summary, we should be more open to the possibilities that our world is much, much more than what we are currently able to experience. Also, this universe is more likely to be teeming with all kinds of life rather than us being all alone in this vast universe.

For most people, our present life experience is limited only to the experience of the physical world.
