Part 1: Background information on cancer

1. This anti-cancer program, based on personal experience and extensive reading, has one BASIC AIM - to show you that cancer IS preventable and "heal-able", and is far from being the death sentence many of us fearfully think it is.

2. What is cancer? Briefly, it is our normal cells gone haywire, and multiplying madly in clusters (tumours). In the process, they affect the surrounding normal cells, attacking and weakening them. Eventually, the malignant cells proliferate and spread (metastasize) all over the body until the latter collapses functionally.

3. What causes cancer? The specific cause is unknown, but it is medically accepted that what causes the cell damage that triggers off the cancerous process is a combination of genetic, behavioral, environmental and lifestyle factors, and this process of cellular deterioration is a slow, insidious one, spread over a long period (10, 20, 30 or more years) of steady bombardment, most commonly by external factors like pollution and food.

4. Types of cancer: There are over 100 types, but the commonest ones are centred around our digestive, respiratory, excretory and reproductive organs, thereby lending weight to the belief that environmental and food factors form the biggest cancer triggers (about 80%).

5. Symptoms: Just remember the word CAUTION (and be guided by it, mindfully!)

Change in bowel or bladder habits
A sore that does not heal
Unusual bleeding or discharge
Thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere
Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing
Obvious change in wart or mole
