Low Mi Yen's Profile

Miyen began her work in the area of counseling in January 1994 when she joined Federation of Family Planning Associations of Malaysia (FFPAM) as their Youth Program Officer. Later that year Miyen went back to the university to pursue her Masters degree. She obtained her Masters in Clinical Psychology in 1996 from National University of Malaysia. After that, Miyen worked as a clinical psychologist at Malaysia Mental Health Association (MMHA) before she joined Motorola Malaysia in February 1999 as their Employee Assistance Program Manager. Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a worksite-based program designed to help identify and facilitate the resolution of behavioral, health and productivity problems that may adversely affect employee well being or job performance. In August 2002, Miyen was promoted to the position of EAP Regional Manager covering all Motorola sites in Asia Pacific. End of July 2004, Miyen left her EAP work after 5.5 years in that field. Now she has set-up her own counseling and consulting company called Integrated Mental Health Solutions.

Miyen's previous work at FFPAM and MMHA ranged from providing counseling to individual, family and specific group, to conducting training and other rehabilitative programs targeting the larger community. From there, Miyen's work has evolved into providing strategic consultation, problem identification and solution management to individual employee and management staff of various Motorola business units. When Miyen joined Motorola Malaysia in February 1999, she led the set-up of the EAP operation there which was the first of its kind, developed for any multinational or local Malaysian company. Miyen has also partnered with the Motorola Asia Pacific Benefit Service Center to design and develop a Mental Health Insurance Coverage Plan which was incorporated into the Motorola Health Insurance Plan for all employees. She also led the setting-up of the mental health provider network for Motorola in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and China and through this involvement it has helped her in establishing good networking and relationship with many mental health professionals in this region.

From February 1999 till July 2004, Miyen has worked closely with many Human Resources staff of different business units within Motorola in Asia Pacific to support various Human Resources initiatives and business change events such as Transition Support during organizational changes; supporting Direct Dealing and Performance Management Initiatives for employees; Crisis Support during critical incident events and various Wellness Initiatives (i.e. Stress Management Workshops, Mental Health related workshops, exhibitions & others).

Miyen has maintained membership in the following professional societies:-

  • Malaysian Psychiatric Association (Life Associate Member). Miyen has been a committee member in the main committee from 2002 till now.
  • Malaysian Mental Health Association (Life Member)
  • Employee Assistance Professionals Association (International Member)

  • Workplace Violence-Pathology, Park Elliott Dietz, MD, PhD (USA)
  • Critical Incident Stress Management, from International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (Maryland, USA)
  • Myers Briggs Type Indicators Accreditation, from Australian Psychologists Press, (Melbourne, Australia)

Miyen speaks English, Malay, Mandarin and Hokkien fluently. From 1997 till now, Miyen volunteers actively by providing training in counseling to lay helpers/volunteers from various Buddhist organizations. Miyen is keen to learn about different culture and way of life thus when she has some free time, she loves to travel and had traveled to many countries like Australia, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Tibet and USA.
